Take-home pay in Tennessee by salary
Single filer, no pre-tax deductions, 2026 rates. The effective rate climbs from 15.8% at $30,000 to 26.6% at $200,000, because federal withholding is banded.

Monthly and biweekly figures differ slightly because withholding is spread over a different number of paychecks. Above $184,500.00 Social Security stops for the rest of the year, so later paychecks run larger; the yearly column accounts for that.
What Tennessee takes from your pay
- Tennessee has no tax on wage income.
- The Hall income tax on interest and dividends was fully repealed in 2021, so wages are untouched at state level.

Paid by the hour in Tennessee?
The calculator above switches to an hourly rate — pick Hourlyunder pay type and enter your rate and weekly hours. If you want the short answer first, here is what common rates come to in Tennessee at a 40-hour week.
| Rate | You keep per hour | Every 2 weeks | Per year |
|---|---|---|---|
| $15/hr | $12.60 | $1,008.35 | $26,217.20 |
| $18/hr | $15.01 | $1,201.19 | $31,231.04 |
| $20/hr | $16.62 | $1,329.75 | $34,573.60 |
| $22/hr | $18.23 | $1,458.31 | $37,916.16 |
| $25/hr | $20.64 | $1,651.15 | $42,930.00 |
| $30/hr | $24.44 | $1,955.25 | $50,836.40 |
| $35/hr | $27.96 | $2,236.65 | $58,152.80 |
| $40/hr | $31.48 | $2,518.05 | $65,469.20 |
- Based on 40 hours a week for all 52 weeks — 2080 hours a year. Fewer hours or unpaid weeks lower every figure here.
- Overtime is not included. When you do work it, only the premium part — the extra half in time-and-a-half — counts towards the federal overtime deduction; the rest is taxed as ordinary pay.
- Hourly work is often paid weekly rather than every two weeks. The total tax over a year is the same either way; only how it is spread changes.
What the state line is worth
Federal tax and FICA are the same wherever you work, so moving across a state line changes exactly one line on your pay stub. Here is that line on a $60,000 salary paid every two weeks, for Tennessee and each state it borders.
| State | Comes out per paycheck | Per year |
|---|---|---|
| Tennessee | nothing | nothing |
| Mississippi | $64.15 | $1,668.00 |
| Arkansas | $66.63 | $1,732.41 |
| Missouri | $72.41 | $1,882.67 |
| North Carolina | $74.33 | $1,932.52 |
| Kentucky | $76.25 | $1,982.40 |
| Georgia | $86.37 | $2,245.50 |
| Virginia | $101.38 | $2,635.90 |
| Alabama | $106.15 | $2,760.00 |
The widest gap is Alabama, where $2,760.00 more a year comes out of the same salary than in Tennessee.
Working in Tennessee but living in a state that does tax income can still leave you owing that state — residency, not where the office is, usually decides who taxes you.
No income tax — so what does Tennessee charge instead?
States without an income tax raise the money elsewhere, and for most of them that means the sales tax. It never shows up on a pay stub, so it is easy to miss when you compare take-home pay across state lines.
- Tennessee charges a state sales tax of 7.00%. With the average local add-on, shoppers pay about 9.61%.
- To put that in money: spend $2,000 a month on taxable goods and the combined rate comes to about $2,306.40 a year — none of which ever appears on a pay stub.
- Property tax is the other big one, and it is set locally rather than by the state, so it varies far more within a state than between states.
Sales tax rates as published for 1 July 2026. The $2,000 a month is an illustration, not a measured average — your own figure depends entirely on what you buy and where.
What changed for 2026
On a $75,000 salary in Tennessee, take-home pay is $17.08 higher per paycheck than in 2025 — about $444.00 over the year.
- The standard deduction rose to $16,100 for single filers, so less of your pay is taxed.
- The Social Security wage base rose to $184,500, so higher earners pay the 6.2% on more of their income.
How the calculation works
- Start with gross pay. Your salary divided by the number of paychecks in the year, or your hourly rate times hours worked.
- Subtract pre-tax deductions. A 401(k) contribution lowers the income that federal tax is calculated on — but not the amount FICA is charged on.
- Apply federal income tax. The IRS percentage method: annualise your pay, then run it through the Publication 15-T withholding schedule. The first $7,500.00 is withheld at 0% — that band stands in for the standard deduction — and the rates step up from there. Divide the result back down to one paycheck.
- Apply FICA. Social Security takes 6.2% up to the $184,500.00 annual wage base; Medicare takes 1.45% with no cap, plus 0.9% more on wages above $200,000.
- Apply Tennessee state tax. Tennessee withholds no state income tax, so this step is skipped.
