What the state line is worth

Federal tax and FICA are the same wherever you work, so moving across a state line changes exactly one line on your pay stub. Here is that line on a $60,000 salary paid every two weeks, for Florida and each state it borders.

State deduction per paycheck, 2026
StateComes out per paycheckPer year
Floridanothingnothing
Georgia$86.37$2,245.50
Alabama$106.15$2,760.00

The widest gap is Alabama, where $2,760.00 more a year comes out of the same salary than in Florida.

Working in Florida but living in a state that does tax income can still leave you owing that state — residency, not where the office is, usually decides who taxes you.

No income tax — so what does Florida charge instead?

States without an income tax raise the money elsewhere, and for most of them that means the sales tax. It never shows up on a pay stub, so it is easy to miss when you compare take-home pay across state lines.

Sales tax rates as published for 1 July 2026. The $2,000 a month is an illustration, not a measured average — your own figure depends entirely on what you buy and where.

What changed for 2026

On a $75,000 salary in Florida, take-home pay is $17.08 higher per paycheck than in 2025 — about $444.00 over the year.

How the calculation works

  1. Start with gross pay. Your salary divided by the number of paychecks in the year, or your hourly rate times hours worked.
  2. Subtract pre-tax deductions. A 401(k) contribution lowers the income that federal tax is calculated on — but not the amount FICA is charged on.
  3. Apply federal income tax. The IRS percentage method: annualise your pay, then run it through the Publication 15-T withholding schedule. The first $7,500.00 is withheld at 0% — that band stands in for the standard deduction — and the rates step up from there. Divide the result back down to one paycheck.
  4. Apply FICA. Social Security takes 6.2% up to the $184,500.00 annual wage base; Medicare takes 1.45% with no cap, plus 0.9% more on wages above $200,000.
  5. Apply Florida state tax. Florida withholds no state income tax, so this step is skipped.
